Time and the elements can cause bricks and stones to come loose from the mortar. If the structure remains intact, it may be possible to replace only the missing bricks or stones for a cost-effective repair.

Repointing is the process of renewing old, tired, cracked or broken mortar joints in masonry construction. Over time, weathering and decay causes voids in the joints between masonry units (usually bricks) allowing the undesirable penetration of water. Water entering through these voids can cause significant damage through freeze/thaw cycles and from dissolving salts and salt deposits. Repointing is also called pointing, or “pointing up”.

Repointing is a critical maintenance task and keeps water from entering the brick wall cavity. If water is allowed to get past the mortar and into the wall brick failure may occur such as cracking or spalling (popping off of the brick face).
