ELEVATOR SHAFTS AND BOXES MASONRY

When working on a new elevator box or shaft project – which includes either a home elevator or a limited use/limited application elevator – it helps to understand the logix of the structure and assist in its seamless blending in with a new construction. Whether an elevator is to be installed immediately or the elevator shaft (or hoistway) is being installed for an elevator to be added in the future, an understanding of the components is necessary before any building begins. The building and work required for creating a lift shaft. elevator box and machine room for a new elevator is broken up into these four main parts.

  1. The lift pit:  A concrete recess either built into the new foundation of a home, or cut into an existing foundation.
  2. The lift shaft:  The shaft (which is like a long wardrobe) inside which the elevator will travel up and down. The shaft can be built from any material (block, timber etc).
  3. The landing doors:  These are the doors that will be used to access the elevator. They are to be leaf doors, hung flush with the inside of the shaft, and hinged to open outwards.
  4. The machine room:  This is where the hydraulic power unit (HPU) and programmable logic computer (PLC) will be installed. These are connected to the lift by a hose and several electrical cables, all supplied as part of the elevator assembly.
We do recommend you call a pro (such as our elevator experts at Lusitania Masonry) before beginning a new construction that has (or might eventually have) an elevator included in the blueprint design (or attempting to build an elevator on your own).
